CHANDIGARH: Controversial Congress party MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was today early morning arrested by Punjab Police from his residence in Sector 5 in Chandigarh.
Khaira was arrested under NDPS Act registered against him in Jalalabad. The FIR No. 35 was lodged on the basis of report submitted by SIT formed in 2023 headed by DIG Swapan Sharma.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira will be presented in the court in jalalabad, the reports said. The case pertains to 2015 in which coaccused were convicted by the court while Khaira was given relief by Supreme court. However Supreme court had allowed the police to investigate the case. A SIT was formed in 2023 for further investigation.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira at the time of his arrest in a video clipping heard saying that he was arrested out of vendetta. He said that no arrest warrants were shown to him.
Partap Singh Bajwa CLP leader condemned the arrest of Khaira and said that AAP government was suppressing the opposition by vendeta politics. Bajwa said that Punjab Police had dented image and they are known for registering false cases.
